ABOUT THE ARTIST

John Wells graduated with a BA in Studio Art from Occidental College in 1979.

His junior year was spent at Waseda University in Tokyo. His chosen alternative to graduate study at a university was to return to Japan in 1982 for a rigorous 3-yr. classical apprenticeship with distinguished Bizen artist, Michiaki Kaneshige.

John later acquired a mountainside property and built his studio and noborigama climbing Kiln at Kugui, Bizen.

John has a good record of acceptances and prizes on national ceramic exhibitions. His marketing is mostly through gallery exhibitions throughout Japan (Tokyo, Okayama, Hiroshima, Osaka, Kyoto, Kyushu, Okinawa, etc.) He is active in the Bizen Artist-potters' Association and the Bizen Potters' Guild, has done some teaching at Okayama University and his work has been showcased on a number of art-show and lifestyle television programs.
